Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara announced on Saturday that the Amsterdam Little Giants will receive $3,000 to purchase new helmets for their athletes.
The Amsterdam Little Giants are an instructional league offering children from ages 5 to 13 an opportunity to participate in for flag football, tackle football, cheerleading and majorettes. In order to comply with new safety standards and regulations, the league needs to purchase new equipment, including upgraded helmets.
“Our children deserve the best safety equipment available, which is why I pushed to make state funds available for new helmets,” said Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara. “With these new helmets, parents can feel more at ease when their kids play football.”
“Thanks to Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara we can equip our athletes with helmets that reflect the latest safety standards,” said league Executive Director Chris Iorio.
As part of the league’s focus on safety, there is a concentrated effort to teach safe tackling and promote awareness about head injuries. The league’s flag football program is also a chance for athletes to learn basic safety procedures before they start playing tackle football.
